Why should you learn English?

Have you ever wondered what is all the fuss about learning English? I grew up in a big family & my parents only studied up to grade 6 but they always encouraged & financed my journey of learning languages especially English.

I am currently an English teacher & I see the same sense of necessity in the minds of my young students’ parents. Although they don’t speak it themselves, they encourage their children to learn it well not only for school purposes but for the real world as well. Many times I end up teaching the parents after they see the improvement in their child.

English is the new Latin

There was a time not so long ago in Europe when in order to be considered a legitimate intellectual or scientist, one was obliged to know Latin well. Almost all of influential books in science were written in Latin because it was the single language that everybody was familiar with.

In these days though English is the main language of communication in every field. You can still find translations in Polish for instance however, the information is always secondhand. Translation in fact is a craft which only a minority of experts are very good at.

Be the first to know

Whether you are a specialist in your field & want to know the latest information about new discoveries or developments in your field, your best chance is to dig in deep in the fresh English papers & books rather than waiting for a translator to do the job after many months.

You might be into movies or novels. The same thing applies here. Imagine your favourite author or director drops a new volume to their book series or a new season of your favourite American/British TV show will be streamed tomorrow. Do you want to rely on the translation?

I can add Video Games, musical artists, festivals & the list is endless. There is nothing wrong with being satisfied with second-hand information but if you want the pie fresh out of the oven, you need to know English.

Multiply by billions

It’s true that probably the most spoken language on earth is probably Chinese, Spanish or Indian because India & China have the highest population now & the number combined is a few times bigger than all the English speaking countries combined however, a big chunk of those population are good at English.

To my knowledge, in every school all across the globe, English is a mandatory subject in high school or prior to it. If you can master it, your opportunities are immediately multiplied by billions because you can now travel, work or study in any country you wish.

Billions because people are behind the experiences. Behind the definition of every country, company & culture are people & we have billions of different people on this earth.

It is not that difficult

Throughout my language-learning journey, I have found English to be the easiest among: Persian, Arabic, German, French, Hungarian & Polish. This doesn’t mean that it is “easy” but if you compare it to other languages, chances are you find it easy.

There is no shortage of material for learning & practicing it either. The default language of many services & products is English which on its own is a great way of practicing the language. In addition to that, there is a big online community for whoever is interested in interacting with other human beings & learn.

Conclusion

No matter how old are you or where are you from, it’s never late to learn English. The learning rate is different for everybody & with enough practice, everybody can master this language.
